New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
