Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline showcasing angels, demons, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of adventurers who will separate from the main group to undertake their own adventure, apart from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (played by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before branching into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for players who enjoy a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are rare.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a violent opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each member has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, wants revenge.
  • The adventurer knows Timmony and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to execute the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could enable the team access places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them few options but to journey toward the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s follow-up content, we discover that the warrior group will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Seekers and Planners tables.

Viewers can look forward to discovering which characters will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, streaming live on next week.
